This movie is very good. it carefully explains and explores a complicated plot, but throws in enough action sequences to keep everyone involved. It got robbed in the ratings, possibly because of the religion controversy.

Beth Hinton gave it a4:
So much more could have been done with this film. It seems the director Ron howard wanted to play it safe, stick to the formula. This movie is critic proof. It is not good or bad, it is medium.

It is an immensely skillful sci-fi adventure, combining the usual elements: heroes and villains, special effects and stunts, chases and explosions, romance and oratory.
83
Seattle Post-Intelligencer William Arnold
Moves like a bullet and, even if they're overblown, the action sequences are still mostly exhilarating and hypnotic. Moreover, the film's human dimension and character development is richer and more rewarding than the genre requires, and its philosophical underpinning more intellectually audacious and seductive: The film is more of a mind-trip than I expected.

80

The Wachowskis still hold the current franchise on intellectually engaging action films. It's not like I won't be heading back for a second (or even third) look.

Alan D. gave it a9:
First, there may be hints of spoilers. second, i'm going to start by saying the dialogue was barely functional, but it did what it needed. there were only three instances that were head-smackingly awful. but it doesnt matter much, really. onward. critics either inadvertenly say exactly what's so appealing about this movie, ("Structured around a series of blackouts and gross-outs, it is one long free fall through icky surrealism and underlighted nightmares." "souless and joyless") or bizaarely attempt to connect any element of this movie to reality. this is a horrible escapism of hate, of evil that isnt dignified enough to make sense to anyone. these are creatures of a child's hateful nightmare that dont need any motivation except to be not just viscerally frightening, but instinctively repulsive. it's horrifying not especially for the gore, but for the violence coming from creations so crude and senseless and... alien to our (or should i say my) sensibilities. "pyramid head" sounds like a completely ridiculous name, but the being itself is exhilaratingly demonic. i believed they were surprisingly sucessful in tapping that primal, reflexive fear of being left completely alone in a confusing and hellish place. also their ability for suspense went criminally undernoticed here. there was genuine dread when those sirens went of as a series of escalating horrors happened after each time it did. these people did not have weapons of any sort (except a knife, which was dropped, and a gun that soon proved useless). horror movies have their own aesthetic, and i suppose this one just went with how i think they should be done, because it's been a few YEARS since i was scared that badly.

It's a volatile subject and Abu-Assad's thoughtful thriller stokes the debate.

90
The New York Times Stephen Holden
Along the way, Paradise Now sustains a mood of breathless suspense. Politics aside, the movie is a superior thriller whose shrewdly inserted plot twists and emotional wrinkles are calculated to put your heart in your throat and keep it there.
80
Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan
A powerful, poignant, provocative drama, it gets its strength from its dispassion, from an uncompromising determination to explain rather than justify or condemn, to put a human face on incomprehensible acts.

80
The New Republic Stanley Kauffmann
Even though no reasonably well-informed viewer will learn much factual information from the picture, it grips; it even torments, because it lets us move and breathe and shiver and resolve with two particular young men. AmeL gave it a9: Aside from good directing this film provides an interesting perspective that needs to be seen. Without going into too much detail it covers both sides of the conflict just enough for the viewers to make their own conclusions. It will make you talk about it after it's done. Highly recommended.

The jazzish score, by Lee's music man, Terence Blanchard, is typically intrusive. But the mood is right, the twists are new. And with one casting inspiration, Inside Man furthers the rising stardom of Chiwetel Ejiofor (Serenity).
89
Austin Chronicle Marc Savlov
As with all of Lee's films, there's much more going on beneath the surface than is immediately apparent.
83
The Onion (A.V. Club) Scott Tobias
With juicy supporting roles for Chiwetel Ejiofor and Willem Dafoe as Washington's fellow officers, the film works best when the characters are just sitting back and shooting the breeze, which is what they're doing much of the time. Here, puzzling out a robbery is more fun than stopping it. Derrick A. gave it an8: Excellent suspense film. Loved the way the robbery went down. Nothing is what it seems, eh? I was thinking "now who's going to have the last laugh". The movie clearly answered that.
